Happy Living is Balanced Living!

I feel that the essence of Happy Living is to do everything in balance.

    Whether it is material, intellectual or spiritual pursuits it is essential that we don’t overdo or ‘under-do’ any one thing.   Sayings such as ‘the happy mean’, the ‘mid-path’ and so on, all refer to balanced living.

      Repression is just as bad as over-indulgence. It is often said that ‘too much of  a good thing is bad’, but we sometimes tend to forget that ‘too little of a good thing’ is also bad!

        We are well aware of the problems of over-indulgence and repression when it comes to food – obesity, anorexia and bulimia!

          It is absolutely fine to enjoy your food but eating too much leads to obesity and its associated problems of ill-health.   Despite the cliche of the ‘jolly rotund man’, obesity does not make for happy living.

            Similarly eating too little (excessive fasting) or avoiding good food leads to emaciation and in the worst case scenario – eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia!

              The same logic applies to work and play situations.  ‘All work and no play’ leads to stress and frustration with all the accompanying ills.   Some people in this category end up in hospital with heart attacks, while others need psychiatric help for mental depression.   If only they had balanced their work, with vacations and time for the family and friends, then such problems could have been avoided.

                Similarly ‘all play and no work’ leads to boredom which is just as problematic.  Some resort to life threatening sports to compensate for their boredom while others even consider suicide as a solution!  All for lack of balance in their lives!

                  This principle of ‘balance’ applies even to so-called selfless actions such as community service, charity work and so on.  Too much of ‘selfless service’ without any thought for personal needs is just as bad as being selfish and over-indulgent!  There must be a balance between the needs of the body, the mind and the spirit! Overdoing any one to the detriment of the other does not make for Happy Living.

                    Repressing our sex instincts (e.g. catholic priests) is just as bad as over-indulging (e.g. Tiger Woods) etc.  A little wine is good … too much may give you a hangover!…

                      All these problems (bulimia, stress, depression, sex-addiction, alcoholism, anorexia, obesity, etc.) come about because of a lack of balance in our lives.   The main culprit for these imbalances are the ‘false teachings’ and religious doctrines that seem to control all of our lives.

                        So called learned figures claim they know what we should do and what we should refrain from doing and even the amounts and ratio…. But the truth is God knows better and He has programmed us far better to do the right things (if only we have faith in our own intuition ..

                          We are too afraid to question these ‘questionable teachings’ because they have been given an aura of  ‘sacredness’!

                            We are afraid to use our God given will power and intellect in choosing the best possible ways to live – so that Happy Living can truly become a way of life.  Instead we always give in to those so-called ‘gurus’ or prophets who claim to know everything – the past, present & the future.  But the only one who knows all the past, all the present and all the future is God – not any man who claims himself to be a specially chosen one of God!

                                Happiness 102: Happiness Enhancers!

                                In an earlier post Happiness 101, I defined Happiness as follows:

                                • Happiness is a state of mind when we FEEL GOOD – whether it is because of External  pleasures (of the Senses),  Internal pleasures (of the Mind) or Internalized pleasures (of the Soul)!

                                Most of us think happiness is got from external sources and so we set about pursuing happiness outside with great gusto.

                                  But the fact remains that Happiness is mainly a State of Mind! And the state of the mind depends on the thoughts we focus on.   Thus by focusing on happy thoughts we can create a happy, peaceful state of mind!

                                    Then and only then can we enjoy or appreciate the external pleasures.  If we are not happy or at peace within,  external or sensory pleasures alone will not make us happy! For example if there has been a death in the family, can we enjoy our favorite food, drink or music or even company?   Of course not.

                                      But if we were already in a happy state of mind (say we passed an exam with flying colors, or got a promotion we have been wanting), then we can really enjoy all the external pleasures.   These external pleasures are what I call Happiness Enhancers – which should be pursued with passion but not obsession!

                                        I have touched on this subject earlier under the post entitled ‘The Problem with Being Happy’ but it is important enough a topic to revisit!  To recap:

                                          What is a Happiness Enhancer?   A happiness enhancer is anything that increases or intensifies our happiness.   It can only increase the happiness that you already have;  if you are unhappy in mind then it cannot be of much help.  A happiness enhancer can be any of a hundred different things and vary from person to person.   An example will clarify better:

                                          EXAMPLE:  Let us take the case of a small family consisting of a father, mother and 3 children.  They have a comfortable income and they communicate well with each other and can be considered to be a happy family.   One day while watching the Travel Channel, the children are excited at seeing Disneyland.   The parents then decide that they want to take the kids to Disneyland – it becomes one of their goals! So they excitedly plan, save some money and in due course of time take the kids on a holiday to Disneyland!   That is an example of a Happiness Enhancer – the goal or purpose of letting the kids enjoy Disneyland gives the parents new motivation, new excitement and enthusiasm.

                                          NOTE:  It is not that the family was unhappy to start with.  They were already happy;  not making the trip to Disneyland would not make them unhappy;  but going on the holiday would enhance or increase their happiness by giving them new adventures, experiences and new memories.

                                          The Comical Side of Scientific Experiments!

                                          Hi There,

                                            Some readers of my blog have said that for a blog on `happy living’ my posts are too serious and heavy!  So today I intend to ‘lighten up’ and talk to you about a couple of ‘Scientific Research’ Experiments that seem comical to me!

                                              1. Is ‘swinging your arms when you walk’ an efficient action? Or is it just a throwback to our evolutionary ancestry – when we used to go about on all fours? Doesn’t swinging the arms involve muscle movement and mean more energy usage?

                                                I think I could have answered that question without any scientific study (just by using simple instinct and common sense), as ‘Yes it is more efficient because it is natural!

                                                  However Biomedical Researchers have conducted a scientific study on the above ‘all important’ question at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

                                                    Method:

                                                    A mechanical model was constructed to study the dynamics of arm-swinging.   Then 10 volunteers were asked to walk with a normal swing, a reverse swing, arms folded, and held stationary at their sides. The energy usage for each style of walking was calculated from the amount of O2 consumption and CO2 production while the volunteers breathed in and out.

                                                      Study Results:

                                                      • Arm swinging while walking has low energy costs because it requires little rotational twist from the shoulder muscles compared with holding the arms still, which used up 12% more energy!
                                                      • The pendulum like swinging of the arms helped to dampen the bobbing up and down motion of walking which caused a loss of energy in the lower leg muscles! If the arms were held still, this bobbing movement (called vertical ground reaction) caused an increase in energy expenditure of 63%!
                                                      • Using a ‘reverse swing’ or an opposite to normal swing (that is right arm in sync with the right leg) caused the energy expenditure to go up 25%.

                                                        Conclusion:

                                                        Arm swinging when walking is more efficient than holding the arms still or arm swinging in reverse!

                                                          The second experiment I am going to describe should take the Guinness Record for being the most ‘frivolous and funny’ experiment ever undertaken in the name of science!  I read about it years ago so I can’t remember the University involved, but its very frivolity makes the experiment hard to forget!

                                                            2. Does the size of the female breasts increase in the mornings as opposed to at night?

                                                              I would be tempted to ask “Who cares?”  Anyway some scientific researchers thought it was important enough to conduct a rigorous study!

                                                                Method:

                                                                They devised an ingenious plan to measure the volume of the breasts.  A basin filled to the brim with water was placed in a larger glass container at about waist height. The female volunteer had to bend forward carefully and immerse her breasts in the basin of water.  The amount of water displaced overflows into the larger container. This water was then measured to give the volume of the breasts.

                                                                  So the volunteers had to do this at night before going to sleep and in the morning immediately on waking up, while the researchers measured the volume of displaced water each time.  After several days the average volume in the morning as opposed to that at night could be accurately figured out!

                                                                    Results:

                                                                    I have no idea because the question was never important enough for me to remember the answer!

                                                                      Conclusion:

                                                                      I know that some sectors of the population (such as Playboy magazine and Voyeurs Anonymous etc.) may totally disagree with my conclusion!   However,  to me it constitutes a colossal waste of funds and time and intelligence to conduct inane experiments like these!

                                                                        Seriously though, sometimes I feel that I too am guilty of treading the same ‘scientific research’ path in this blog on Daily Happy Living!   Because most of the ideas I share in this blog is ‘common sense’ and does not need rigorous study.

                                                                          Unfortunately however, common sense has become so uncommon nowadays because we have given up our right to think for ourselves!   Thus this blog may still serve a purpose and not be considered as frivolous as the above scientific experiments.

                                                                            So I give myself permission to continue boring (or inspiring) you my readers for some time to come! Do keep a lookout for my next post.

                                                                              ‘The Song not the Singer’ would be a better saying!

                                                                              Hi There,

                                                                                This is continued from the last post entitled ‘Singer Not the Song’.   Just recently I saw another example of people accepting things on hearsay and not questioning it rationally!

                                                                                  Two days ago I came across an aricle by a well known Feng Shui expert writing about the dangers of moving around during a Solar Eclipse.   One point the writer mentioned was that:  Because the sun is the source of all energy for the planet, during the six minutes or so of the eclipse (the sun’s rays being ‘blocked’ by the moon) we can expect a lot of negative ‘energy’!

                                                                                  My question is this:  “How about when the sun’s rays are blocked for about 10 hours every night?  Doesn’t the negative energies hold much greater sway during the 10 hours than during the 6 minutes?”

                                                                                    As far as I know, this ‘solar eclipse is not good for us’ idea dates back from prehistoric times when people had no answer for natural phenomena and gave stupid explanations such as:  “The dragon in the sky is swallowing the sun!”;  “Zeus must be angry with the sun-god Helius” (or is it Appollo?); “The monkey god Hanuman is carrying the sun under his armpit to prevent the sun from rising so that he can deliver the herbs to save Laxman from his mortal wounds”  and dozens of other equally silly stories.

                                                                                      If I’m not mistaken I think it was in the book ‘King Solomon’s Mines’ that the adventurer managed to convince the angry savages that he had the power to hide the sun – because very conveniently a solar eclipse came along to save his skin!

                                                                                        Now we are in the 21st Century and we are no more savages (I hope), but we still accept so many statements made by the so-called leaders or gurus without question and with absolute loyalty!  We really believe in the ‘Singer not the song!’   If a person is famous or revered for any reason whatsoever, we accept 100% anything and everything he/she says and follow it with diligence and persistence – even though the statements are very suspect and are nothing more than superstitions.  This I believe is a major reason for our collective unhappiness on earth!

                                                                                          In the case of the Feng Shui article, I am quite sure that many `Feng Shui’ fans would have taken precautions as suggested by the expert, without questioning the wisdom of what they were asked to do!   This is another example of people listening blindly to advice without first questioning its validity.

                                                                                            We keep following the rituals and observances and penances for years without any positive result that comes directly from those practices – yet we continue to do so out of fear that we may suffer more if we did not do so!  How then can one be happy?

                                                                                              I have described the common sense approach to happy living  in some detail in my earlier posts:  ‘The One Major Cause of Our Unhappiness’,  ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’, ‘The World According to Gopi’,  ‘God Wants Us to Be Happy’… etc.  Here is a little excerpt from one of those posts:

                                                                                              Similarly what is important in Life is `HOW to Live Life’.    All we need are a few simple rules to live a great, wonderful life.

                                                                                              After years and years of study, frustration, confusion and overcoming superstitions, I have finally formulated my own system of beliefs which I find makes it easy for me to live happily every day.    This belief system of mine covers the following major items:

                                                                                              • My beliefs about the Creator
                                                                                              • My beliefs about the World & Reality
                                                                                              • My beliefs about the Mind and how it works
                                                                                              • My beliefs about Co-creation
                                                                                              • My beliefs about Happiness

                                                                                              If you dear reader would begin to question your own beliefs about the items in the list above and come up with your own workable beliefs, then you are on the way to happy living!

                                                                                                If you learn to question any aphorism or proverb or ritual or observances (no matter what ‘authority’ created them) before accepting them and practicing them, then too you would be well on the path to happy living.

                                                                                                  Remember it is the song that is important – not the singer!  The subject of the discourse is what we should debate upon – not how well the speaker delivered the speech, or how well he is dressed or his charisma!

                                                                                                    But most of the time I find people doing the opposite at seminars or spiritual talks – they are commenting on ‘how great the speech was, how famous the speaker is, and so on.

                                                                                                      If you ask them “What was the substance of the talk?”  They would reply if they were honest: “I don’t know.  But it was a great speech!  He is a great speaker!  His English or Tamil or other language is excellent!”

                                                                                                        I feel tempted to retort: “Hey, we are here to learn something aren’t we – we are not newspaper critics looking for material for our next column!”

                                                                                                          I would like to conclude this post with my favorite quotation which I shared in my earlier post:

                                                                                                          Reader’s Question: “Why does God allow bad things to happen?”

                                                                                                          In this post I would like to answer another question by a reader:  “Why does God allow bad things to happen?”

                                                                                                            Another great question!  I believe this is one that many people keep asking, because they do not understand the principle of creating and operating a system.

                                                                                                            True Story: A few weeks ago a freak accident happened on one of the expressways of Malaysia.  A bus crashed through the guard rails at the side of the road and the rails speared through the bus.  This resulted in the horrific deaths of several passengers.

                                                                                                            As usual there were a lot of mail in the newspapers saying that the guardrails should be better designed and changed and so on.   Most people forgot that the the true cause of the accident  was the driver and not the guardrails!   As some wit once said:  “The cause of any accident is always the nut behind the steering wheel!”   The guardrails are not designed to keep your vehicle on the road safely if you hit it at 90 km/h or so!  And they need not be!   But as usual the public will blame the highway builders.

                                                                                                              Of course there are some cases where the highways are not designed properly: such as poor banking at road curves unable to accommodate the recommended speeds,  road surface deteriorating very fast in the rainy season, high possibility of landslides etc.   But in the vast majority of cases, the expressways in Malaysia are of a really high standard!

                                                                                                              Why am I bringing up this incident?  Because it reflects the way people think in general.  They always tend to find someone or something outside of themselves to blame.   They do not accept responsibility for their own actions!  In the case above, if the driver had been alert (not sleepy or on drugs or whatever else caused the lapse of concentration) and was driving safely, then this accident would not have occurred.   To blame the road designers or the guardrails for being the main cause of the problem is ridiculous!

                                                                                                                Of course when a public road used by thousands is involved, there will be cases when you may end up in an accident even if you are not to blame.   Some other car suddenly jumps the divider and falls into your path – you cannot avoid the crash and it is not your fault!   But it is still the other driver’s fault – not the fault of the road designer or builder! Similarly the world too is designed to be of a high standard (perhaps the highest standard) by the Creator.   But we have to be responsible for our own actions.

                                                                                                                • To take just one example:  In the USA especially, every day we hear of shooting related deaths of children and other innocent people, but they are still very reluctant to pass a Gun Control Law!   It seems ridiculous to me that small kids (pre-teenagers) are involved in  fatal shootings.   If they had no easy access to guns, these tragedies would not have occurred.   But the majority of the adults  insist on their right to bear arms and are negligent in keeping the guns out of reach of the children.   So when the innocent children die, do we blame God or the people whose actions caused the tragedies?

                                                                                                                Even when we talk of global events, such as climate change, is God really to blame?  We cause the problems and over a long period  of time it escalates into a global catastrophe!   Just as when we drive on the roads, we have to follow certain common sense rules to avoid accidents, so too in life we have to follow certain common sense rules to maintain the integrity of the planet.

                                                                                                                  Just as the designer of the road cannot (and should not) have to be responsible for every individual driver’s actions, so too God cannot be held responsible for the actions of each human!  Each one of us has been provided with the tools (our body and our senses) and the ability (our brains and mind) to live a wonderful life in a truly well-designed universe.   It is our responsibility to make sure we do live a wonderful life.

                                                                                                                    Another thing to remember is how Universal Laws work.   A universal law or principle has to be true all the time and has to be neutral – not a respecter of persons!   This will be discussed in the next post Part 2 of  “Why does God allow bad things to happen?”.

                                                                                                                      Happy Living Tip #4: “Start a Daily Gratitude Diary!”

                                                                                                                      Well Friends,

                                                                                                                      Here I am again with another useful tip for Happy Living.   I know that at times it is very difficult to feel grateful, when everything seems to be going wrong.  But it is exactly when things don’t seem to be going right that we have to exercise our `gratitude muscles’.

                                                                                                                      • Let’s take the following worst case scenario of a 30 year old male, say John:   John has just arrived at his office late after struggling through one of the worst traffic jams.   Then he gets the news that he has been retrenched!  He also receives a final notice saying his car will be repossessed within 14 days.  Then there is a call from his credit card company, politely reminding him that he is behind in the monthly payment.  He checks his emails and there is a `Dear John’ letter waiting from his long time girl friend!  What a day!
                                                                                                                      • Now if at that time I were to tell John to count his blessings, he would be excused for trying to strangle me!

                                                                                                                      When he calms down I tell him “John, I know you have had a lousy day.  But think about this for a minute.  You can hear me when I talk can’t you (you are not deaf); you can see me (you are not blind);  you can walk over to me and try to strangle me (you are not cripple);  your mental faculties are intact and you are also healthy, aren’t you?   So you are so much better off than the thousands or millions of people who are not as lucky as you!”

                                                                                                                        “For all you know this retrenchment might be a fabulous chance for you to go after your dreams, rather than struggle daily in a frustrating job.   In a couple of months you would have settled all your outstanding bills and be looking forward to life!  Perhaps you will meet your soulmate, now that you are free of your old girl friend. “
                                                                                                                        But all these can only happen, if you are in a happy frame of mind.  If you are in a dejected or depressed state,  and go about with a `black cloud hanging over your head’, you will not be able to see or grasp any new opportunities that can come up!   Worrying and complaining will only make you feel worse and you will attract a miserable future – as a self-fulfilling prophecy!   So when things seem the worst, is the best time to start thinking of things to be grateful for.

                                                                                                                      This is the basis of today’s Happy Living Tip.

                                                                                                                      Happy Living Tip #4:  Start a Daily Gratitude Diary!

                                                                                                                      Just get any exercise book, note down today’s date and start writing down at least 5 things you are grateful for today.

                                                                                                                      UNDERLYING PRINCIPLES:

                                                                                                                      One of the best explanations I have read about gratitude and its power is by Wallace D. Wattles in his classic The Science Of Getting Rich (SOGR) written about a century ago!  You can download a free copy of his book by clicking on the above link.   He devotes one whole chapter to this topic of Gratitude – Chapter 7.   Some of the highlights are given below:

                                                                                                                      • There is a law of gratitude, and it is absolutely necessary that you should observe the law if you are to get the results you seek.  It is the natural principle that action and reaction are always equal and in opposite directions.
                                                                                                                      • The grateful outreaching of your mind in thankful praise to the Supreme Intelligence is a liberation or expenditure of force.  It cannot fail to reach that to which it is addressed and the reaction is an instantaneous movement towards you!
                                                                                                                      • But the value of gratitude does not consist solely of getting you more blessings in the future.  Without gratitude you cannot keep from dissatisfied thought regrading things as they are. To permit your mind to dwell on the inferior is to surround yourself with inferior things.
                                                                                                                      • The grateful mind is constantly fixed on the best.  Therefore it tends to become the best.  It takes the character and form of the best and so will receive the best!
                                                                                                                      • Also faith is born of gratitude.  The grateful mind continually expects good things and expectation becomes faith!

                                                                                                                      PRACTICAL APPLICATION:

                                                                                                                      Initially you may struggle with it, but soon you will find that you have more than 5 things you are grateful for.   It is just a matter of changing our habit of looking for faults and begin the the habit of looking for things to be grateful for, to be happy about.

                                                                                                                      When you begin writing, start out with simple things, such as:

                                                                                                                      1. I am grateful that I woke up this morning;
                                                                                                                      2. I am grateful that I live with my family;
                                                                                                                      3. I am grateful that I have a job to go to;
                                                                                                                      4. I am grateful for my good health;
                                                                                                                      5. etc. etc.

                                                                                                                      Soon you will be on a roll and can come up with more than 5 things to be grateful for.

                                                                                                                        In closing, remember to start your own Daily Gratitude Diary or Journal, TODAY!.   Make a habit of it and see how things start improving for you!

                                                                                                                      Well Friends, sorry that I have been unable to blog in the last few days because of the arrival of a VIP into our family! So the promised blog post entitled ‘The World According to Gopi” will have to be held over to the next.

                                                                                                                        Now who is the VIP who has caused such a stir in the family and ousted my proposed blog?   It is our very first grandchild! Last week my dear wife of 35 years and I went to Seremban to welcome the arrival of my eldest son’s first baby Hiranya! Although the childbirth entailed ceasarian surgery, both mother and child are fine.

                                                                                                                          It was a really happy `Birth’ day!   What a reason for celebration – a new life has been brought into this world!  And may she continue to enjoy many, many, many more birthdays.   I do so want to explain just how important and wonderful a new life, any new life, is.   However I am at a loss for words!

                                                                                                                            As Shakespeare would say: “For I have neither wit, nor words, nor the power of speech to stir people….”

                                                                                                                              Fortunately, just last month I received a truly wonderful Birthday Greeting from  the Tut Adventurers Club which is so unique that I would like to dedicate it to our new VIP Hiranya.

                                                                                                                                A few days ago, heaven and earth erupted into a major celebration with the news of your impending adventure into this very time and space. You see, someone like Hiranya Menon doesn’t come along all that often. In fact, there’s never been a single one like you, nor is there ever ANY possibility that another will come again. You’re an Angel among us.  Someone, whose eyes see what no others will EVER see, whose ears hear what no others will EVER hear, and whose perspective and feelings will NEVER, ever be duplicated.  Without YOU, the Universe, and ALL THAT IS, would be sadly less than it is….

                                                                                                                                  The above birthday greeting extols the singular value that I too place on LIFE, and continually advocate in this blog – but it does so with far better words and poetic prose!

                                                                                                                                    MY ODE TO LIFE

                                                                                                                                      I believe that Life is a Miracle, perhaps the greatest miracle of all!   The creation of the physical world (the galaxies, with an infinite variety of suns, stars and planets), pales in comparison with the creation of a Human Being.  For all their wonderful aspects, the planets and the suns are inanimate – they cannot recreate themselves or create anything new.

                                                                                                                                        The Human Being however is a living, breathing, thinking, feeling being, who is also a Co-Creator on her/his own terms.  He/she has been given the power to create things that are not found naturally in Nature, such as music and art and books and buildings and cars and planes and computers and internet etc. etc….Hence, this creation of a human life has got to be the highest aspect of Creation (in this dimension at least)!

                                                                                                                                          However on a personal level, I believe that Life is the Greatest Gift that we have been given.   Without life there is nothing!  No feelings, no experiences, no happiness, no sorrows, no purpose, no achievements – absolutely nothing! — Gopi Menon

                                                                                                                                            With that ode to life, I come to the end of this post.   We will return to `The World According to Gopi’ in the next post – I promise!

                                                                                                                                              We are All Programmed for Happiness, i.e. God Wants Us to Be Happy!

                                                                                                                                              Can that be true?  Of course, YES!   I have yet to hear of anyone who prays for `unhappiness’!   Has anyone of you ever prayed : “God I am too happy;  please give me some unhappiness!”   I don’t think so.   Why?  It is because Nature has programmed us humans to be happy!

                                                                                                                                              Being Happy is Our Birthright

                                                                                                                                              Being Happy is our Birthright! In fact being happy ranks even higher than `self-preservation’ on the list of priorities of humans.   That is why so many commit suicide – because they feel without happiness, there is no point living.

                                                                                                                                              Now if Happiness is so vital and we have been programmed to be happy, why do humans find it so hard to be happy and seem to be miserable most of the time?  BECAUSE we humans have the wrong beliefs about the nature of world and the nature of the mind!

                                                                                                                                              If we only understood the nature of the world and the laws of the mind, then we would be able to create the happy life we were programmed to live.   We can `choose to create our own reality’ rather than just accept or endure a miserable, unfulfilled life.

                                                                                                                                              • Let me begin with a small anecdote:  Thomas Alva Edison (the great inventor of the electric bulb, gramophone, cinema projector etc) was once asked by a lady: “What is Electricity?” Edison replied: ” Madam, Electricity IS, just USE it!”

                                                                                                                                              The Pursuit of Happiness – Does it Make Sense?

                                                                                                                                              Since time immemorial people have been pursuing happiness – but they don’t seem to be any nearer to capturing it! This is because they have been misinformed and deluded for centuries.  Even the American Declaration of Independence contains these  famous words:

                                                                                                                                              “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

                                                                                                                                              Unfortunately people have been misdirected by these words `pursuit of happiness’ being uttered in the same breath as Life & Liberty and thought the idea to be self-evident.   And they took it to be literally true.  But this is just not so!   Happiness is not `out there’ to be pursued and captured. True happiness comes from within us and is to be created and experienced. It is by not understanding this that most people spend all their lives `pursuing’ happiness and end up dying miserable!

                                                                                                                                              • Once we realize that happiness is within each one of us and can be created purposely by us and made into a regular habit, then we can be living happy every day of our lives!

                                                                                                                                              The above sentence covers the essence of what I am going to be sharing in this blog.   However I know it is a great stretch for people to go from thinking `happiness is out there to be pursued/captured’ to `happiness is within us to be created and experienced’!   Hence in this blog we will be taking it slow, a step at a time so that anyone can follow the logic as well as the practical application of the tips I am going to suggest.

                                                                                                                                              NOTE:   These tips are what I personally am still using to change my decades long  periods of misery to one of daily happiness.   Seems too good to be true?   Why not just keep an open mind and follow along, then make your own decision!    Accept it or reject it  – that’s your God given choice, but at least hear me out first!

                                                                                                                                              Abe Lincoln says `Happiness is a Habit’  but I have to add that `Happiness is first of all a Choice, which by regular usage becomes a Habit’!   What do I mean by `Happiness is a Choice’?   Do we really have a choice?

                                                                                                                                              Most of us go around asking:  “How can I be happy when`he makes me angry’ or `my job makes me frustrated’ or `my spouse does not support me’ etc?”   But is that really true?  Let us take a simple daily example that makes us upset, even furious at times.   I am talking about discourtesy on the road that causes some of us to  experience undue anger to the point of `road-rage’!
